Assignment 4: Multimedia Design, Create & Review Group Project

This is our group assignment “League of Legends” teaching blog.

Discussion

Introduction

This learning content is designed as an introduction blog to beginners on League of Legends (LoL), a popular strategic competitive video game that requires teamwork. By the end of the learning plan, viewers of the blog will be able to have basic knowledge on the settings, characters and some basic but fundamental ways to win the game. With this knowledge, the viewers should have a general understanding to get them started on playing this video game.

Learning Outcomes

After reading and studying through the blog, the viewers will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of League of Legends (LoL)
    • Know how and where to check the status of their account
    • Understand and select suitable champion characters
    • Understand and select suitable lane during the match
    • Understand and select suitable equipment for the match
    • Understand what a team needs to do in the game to win

Implementation of Learning Theories

The learning plan includes both texts and videos that explain the rules of LoL based on Dual Coding Theory. The knowledge on LoL in our blog has explanatory texts for the viewers to read and learn, as well as a video presented. According to Dual Coding Theory, this design of visual learning content combined with audio would increase the likelihood of the viewers to recall the information of separate collection later on. The use of videos, as well as the screenshots taken from the game surface would also help the viewers learn by watching and looking at the video game in a real-world situation and thus help the viewers get more familiar with the games surface.

Our plan also used infographic at the end of the blog to provide the viewers a conclusion of the main points from the blog. The poster of “Things To Do in Game” combines the take-away points concluded from the blog and some relevant images to remind the viewers what these points are. The poster serves as a summary of the main points and is both entertaining to see and is helpful for recalling the relevant contents.

We divided the learning plan into sections of maps, champions, equipment, main page and account information, as well as the goal of the game. By doing this, we aim to implement segmenting principle from the multimedia learning principles we learned in EDCI 337. We designed the crucial information about LoL into several segments so that the viewers would learn in their own pace by sections. The arrangement of the sections are also designed in a way that viewers take in new information piece by piece, and one section is built on the former section in the way new knowledge is conveyed in a gradual and steady pace.

Skills Gained and Evaluation

By the end of the learning plan, the viewers will be able to understand that the video game League of Legends is a strategic game that requires teamwork. They will understand the basic settings of the game including the maps, the champion characters, and some fundamental rules of the game to get them started playing. They will also understand and be able to choose the champion characters that suit themselves, as well as the lanes which are the strategies that would suit them during a match.

The learning outcomes could be evaluated by the learning objectives. Viewers would be asked to find certain information in their game account and evaluated based on whether they are able to find the information as well as how quick it takes for them to find it. They will also be asked to pick a champion and the lane they would fight in a match, as well as the reason of their choices. This is to evaluate whether they understand the choices on champions and lanes to play in matches. Finally, they will be asked to play in a battle, and will be asked whether they know what they need to do to win the match, so as to evaluate whether they understand what a team needs to do in the game to win.

Project Plan

Our team decided on this topic by each listing three to five things we are interested in within the suggested topic list. We then went through the video game’s rules and divided the knowledge of the game into five sections. Afterwards, we decided the order of the five sections based on the perspective of a beginner so that the viewers would learn the contents in their own pace and receive new information step by step. Finally we divided the workload so that everyone of our team get approximately similar amount of work to do.

This project plan could also be used on learning contents design that aims to teach certain skills such as learning a type of sports or a craft skill. It is because the project plan aims to present the core skills of a chosen topic and then asks the viewers to learn and practice on the topic chosen.

League of Legends (LoL) is a team-based video game where two teams of 5 players in each team are set to compete and destroy their opponent’s base. In the video game, there are champions which are characters played by the players, minions which are AI troops released from the base’s tower that automatically attack the nearest enemy structure, turrets and inhibitors to protect from the opponent’s attack, and monsters with various features to interact in the match, as well as a battlefield called map with lanes and jungles.

LoL is an aggressive video game that requires teamwork and strategies. The complex rules of the game champions with diverse skills, and the set of the map and monsters provide the game with many variables and exciting battle scenes that are both engaging to play and fun to watch.

This guide will introduce LoL in terms of its map, champions, and equipment.

Map Introduction:

In the League of Legends this game, has a total of three roads, the top, mid, and bot. In a team, each path has a different goal and economy to match.

  • Top Lane

The top lane champions are mainly tanks. Tank champions distract enemy fire allowing other teammates with high attack output to kill the enemy. The lane phase is essential for this position because the player must be powerful late in the game.

  • Jungle

Controlling the jungle ensures you can control rotations, especially in the early stages that determine many match winners and losers. He can accumulate money and experience, eventually allowing him to start sneaking up on people.

  • Mid Lane

The mid lane is the output core of the spell attack, and the champion’s output usually has the highest damage value. Champions in this position must use their vision well. Because they usually get sneaked up. Champions with better mobility on the midline can take out waves of minions and wilds with their roaming abilities. Depending on the current situation, they can also move around quickly in different parts of the map. It can also use this feature with the jungle to defeat the enemy in that path.

  • Bot Lane

The bot lane is usually played by marksmen and supporters, who develop up for group battle experience while maintaining their state.

Champions classification:

In League of Legends, there is 6 champions classification for summoners to choose from assassin, fighter, mage, marksman, support, and tank. Each type of champion has similar characteristics. I will analyze each of these classifications below:

  • Assassin

Assassins are champions who can deal high burst damage to their enemies and have low sustained damage capabilities. They do not have high survivability. There are physical damage assassins and ability power damage assassins in the game. Their common feature is that they all rely on skills.

  • Fighter

Fighters have higher survivability and can also inflict higher damage on their enemies. They are more balanced — half-tank, half-damage done champions. Physical damage is the main source of their damage.

  • Mage

Mages rely mainly on skill damage. They do not have high survivability but can deal high magic damage to enemies, their attack distance is long.

  • Marksman

Marksmen are also called ADC. They have a long attack distance and rely on attack damage. They have the greatest sustained damage capabilities, but their survivability is weak.

  • Support

Supports are generally protective champions. In the team, they have to try to protect their teammates from being killed. Generally, they do not do much damage.

  • Tank

Tanks are vanguard champions. Their damage is the lowest, but with the highest survivability. They will make the most of the enemy’s damage to their teammates.

Here’s a video that may help you to find your favorite champion class.https://www.youtube.com/embed/umAPFTsgYtw?feature=oembed

Equipment items:

Before entering the summoner’s rift, you better look at the equipment information in ITEMS, under the Collection on the main page. Here is all the equipment, and the equipment synthesis tree. For example the photo below.

After entering the rift of the summoner. You can see the circled part in the picture, you need to left-click on either of these two places to buy equipment.

Item is divided into four qualities. Unlike the others, mythic quality equipment can only be purchased in the backpack. And, boots are also only one type to buy in the backpack. The equipment is the same as the champions. It can be divided into ability power, physical damage, attack speed, blood defense, and so on. The part circled in thicker red on the left is the specific classification of the equipment. Player needs to purchase the equipment which is fit their champion. Also here is a very nice system for beginners, here is a “RECOMMENDED”. If you don’t know what equipment you need to choose, just follow the recommendations. Like the photo shows below.

Main Page & Account Information:

Here is a screenshot of the main page. Your friend’s list is shown on the far right. And taking up most of the page are some of the latest news. Including champions, skins, and some news about League of Legends. Here is a video for the introduction.

  • 4 Icons
  • Profile

This outlines some information about your achievements. Just like the photo below.

Also, on this page. You could click your icon and change your icon, title, token, and border. After level 50, every 25 levels up will gives you a new border. The photo is shown below.

  • Collection

It shows all the stuff you have. It already helps you count how much stuff you have. Like the photo below.

  • Loot

On this page are some of the props you can use. The leftmost part circled in red is the classification of props.

  • Store

As the name. This page is where you get to spend your money. You can buy champions, skins, and Loot here. but first, you have to Purchase RP. All the props in the store are purchased through RP.

The Goal of the Game:

To win the game, the five team members are assigned different roles and will be expected to reach the opponent’s base through at least one lane and destroy the tower in the middle of the base. On the lanes are defense structures that could cause damage to the champions and minions. In order to get to the opponent’s base, the team members need to work together to clear at least one lane by destroying the structures of turrets and inhibitors on that lane. At the same time, they need to prevent the opponents’ from getting to their base and destroying their tower.

The choice of team members would affect the match as different lanes are suited for different team members. For example, the top lane is usually played by tough solo fighters of the teams who would face the most powerful enemy and defend their own base. The choice of champion characters is also an important aspect of the game because different champions possess different skills that work better in different positions on the map. Keep in mind that the power of the champions could be improved by experience to level up and gold to buy equipment.

The areas between the lanes are jungles where neutral monsters like Baron Nashor and Drakes are. Killing these monsters would provide buffs for the team that would increase the whole team’s chance of winning.

Hi NX,

I love the photos of your cute family members. Your photo editing made the photos look so different. The floor where the cat is on was kind of messy in the first photo, but when it is darkened it brings the attention to the cute cat. In the second photo the dog’s fur looks so much whiter after editing and it stands out much more than the original photo.

Week 7 Blog Post – Photo Processing

I chose some photos in my phone that I have taken some time ago, and edited them to make them look better. I used cropping, filtering, and some color scheme and they came out really different!

Here are two before editing:

They look so different! I sent them to a few friends and they all liked them. I found the photo editing so helpful and fun because the process is another creation of an art piece and I really enjoy the process of making my photos more beautiful.

Feedback on NX’s Week 6 Post

Here’s the original blog post of NX’s:

Hi NX,

Well done on the video using Openshot video editor. I like watching the interactions between the person in the video and the two pets! Through your reflection I also see what Openshot video editor could do and some of its nice features it has. I also want to ask about the content of the video. Is it a video shot to record lovely moments of life? Or did you have other purposes when you edited the video?

Week 6 Blog Post – SMAR and Its Possible Application

I find the SMAR model very interesting and looked up more about it. Here’s one definition of SMAR: a framework for identifying the interaction of technology and pedagogy. Here’s the original video for your interest:

The video also shared some great tools and resources that could be used to apply the SMAR model on.

I find SMAR model interesting because it evaluates teaching in the four levels that also shows one’s own understanding of the technology in relation to pedagogy. When learning about SMAR model, I feel like I am also learning what technology has brought us and what we could make of technology and adapt it into learning.

I grew up with the change of technology, but more and more people are growing up having the kind of technology already in a “mature” stage with all the convenient sharing functions. Videos and photos can be taken and shared very easily. Learning to evaluate and apply SMAR model into teaching and content designing, is like learning how to adapt to the world of technology and accepting it as part of life, rather than something that needs to be kept out of class. So when we could share our moments of life with other people using cool functions on our cellphones, why can’t we do the same to share learning contents?

Image from Canva

Getting the learners to use, create and share videos of learning contents that they found or created could be a good way of learning under the SMAR model. In this way, the learners are both learning using the technology and sharing their learning process and results which maximizes the learning.

One way I could think of that would get the learners to use, create and share their own videos in learning, is to have a forum that allows for discussion and sharing. On the forum learners would be given a topic and post learning resources they could find. Learners would be asked to comment on each other’s resources so as to learn from each other. Then they would be asked to make their own learning contents in forms of videos, blogs, etc. Then the learners would be asked to comment on each other’s post again to share feelings and reflect on their learning and designing of learning contents.

Assignment 3: Core Multimedia Skills

I chose one of the infographics I created for topic 4 post, and improved it to reflect my current understanding of multimedia learning principles.

Here’s what it looks like when I first designed infographic of the topic separate collection using Canva:

My original work

It was a simply infographic that promotes the idea of separate collection of wastes.

Here’s the improvement I made on this topic:

My edited work

My original project had only pictures with simple words describing the aim of the infographic. My new version made this promoting infographic into a short video describing what separate collection is and how we could do it. This short video uses both images and audio. This way, viewers not only get to know separate collection and its importance, but also understand what they can do to perform this practice. I also added more useful information related to the concept of separate collection, and used some multimedia principles to make it more affective in conveying the messages.

Created by Emerson on Canva

I made this update because first, the short video provides both audio and images. Based on Dual Coding Theory, the information presented in my improved version of the topic is both visual and audio, which increases the likelihood of the viewers to recall the information of separate collection later on. The original infographic has only visual texts and images without any explanation and is not likely to make an impression on the viewers compared to the short video.

The second reason for the improvement is that it contains more useful contents that interest the viewers. The original infographic was simple and straightforward, but the concept of separate collection of municipal wastes may not be common to the viewers. By changing it into a short educational video, I improved the effect of the content and readiness of the viewers by explaining why we should implement separate collection for municipal waste. It gets the viewers emotionally ready to learn.

Besides the two reasons for the change, I also implemented the segmenting principle and personalization principle into my design of the short video. I designed the content to be learner-paced, and introduced the concept based on a learner’s steps of understanding. I also used “we” rather than third person language because according to the personalization principle from the class material, first person language is shown to be more affective than third person language when used in lessons.

Reply to JY’s Topic 5

Here’s the original post of JY’s:

Hi JY,

I really like your clear and structured post for this week’s topic. I also appreciate your thoughts on the UDL, UID and UBD. I also agree about your thoughts that suggests public learning materials should provide access to learning contents for not only general students but also students with special needs. In my post for this week, I also mentioned that it is important for learning contents to think about giving access to students with obstacles in learning, such as hearing loss or visual impairments. Everyone deserves equal opportunities to learn and it shouldn’t be stopped by their certain physical limits.

I also think your idea that states “Each student chooses their own unique path of learning without being forced to do something they don’t like to do.” is interesting. I think this idea is a student centered idea that would be great for individual learning and development. However, I would like to provide a thought on this: Do you think this kind of idea would be easy to put into practice? Especially for schools with limited resources on teachers and/or teaching resources? Although it would be ideal that every student could learn according to their own pace and preferences, I think it might be a way that would require special attention from the teachers’ side. Do you have any suggestions on how to put this kind of thinking in use, so that most students could get treated according to their individual pace and preference on study?

Inclusion and Differentiated Learning

This week’s topic on inclusion and integration really had me understand a lot more about being inclusive in learning and content design, as well as being inclusive in general. The video below that I took from this week’s learning material demonstrates inclusion versus integration really well.

I remember watching a movie of a genius who is talented in mathematics. He cannot hear anything, so he has to read people’s lips to know what they say. When he went to college and attended mathematics classes, the school was very considerate and appointed someone who could interpret the class content into sign language for this student when the teacher turns around to write down things on the black board while speaking. Although the problem is there was little sign language that could be used to interpret the mathematical content, and this student found it extremely difficult to understand the class content.

This story made me think deeply about being integrative and being inclusive. When including, and even welcoming people from certain groups or social backgrounds into a larger group, adaptations need to be thought of, not only through the eyes of the “normal” people but also the perspective of the minorities. We would find it easy to listen to the teacher and read all the contents presented to us in a normal classroom setting, but think about people who cannot hear or see, or someone who has reading problems. The would be a completely different experience to them.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a very good way to start when designing learning contents considering the topic of inclusion. I highly recommend the Know-Understand-Do and I think it is also a good way for anyone to learn new things. By applying this to a learning content design, we as designers could evaluate our own work using this principle. When testing the learners on their learning results, using the Know-Understand-Do process could help the designer of the content to better understand the needs of the target learners.

https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/

Furthermore, I would like to say that even as students now, we should also pay close attention to the topic of being inclusive and openminded. This helps us think ahead and prepare ourselves for the situations that we may walk into in the future. An openminded mindset also makes us see the possible perspectives that we may otherwise fail to see.

Feedback on JY’s Topic 4 Post

JY’s original content above.

Hi JY,

I really like your designs! The color combinations look so natural and matching. Your first poster about the yard sale emphasized on the topic which focuses on the point and also has the detailed information. It looks very functional and attractive.

The second series of your brochures have very nice colors too. They look very calming and relaxing. I noticed there are more information on the second series of brochures and wonder whether they are designed to be the same yard sale as the first poster. If so the huge difference between the first poster and the second brochure series to me is a little abrupt. But they are both very nice designs and you did a great job!
